County hosts waste collections
St. Croix County residents are encouraged to properly dispose of household hazardous chemicals and unwanted appliances at separate county-sponsored collections Saturday, Sept. 20 — the last collections of the year.
St. Croix County residents are encouraged to properly dispose of household hazardous chemicals and unwanted appliances at separate county-sponsored collections Saturday, Sept. 20 — the last collections of the year.
Individuals who want to rid their homes, farms or businesses of hazardous materials — pesticides, herbicides, solvents, poisons, oil- and lead-based paints, and more — can bring them to the collection at the New Richmond Street Department Shop, 1006 N. Dakota Ave., from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Most household hazardous waste will be accepted free of charge.
Other acceptable items include cell phones, corrosive materials, non-empty aerosol cans and button batteries. In addition, fluorescent lamps 4 feet and under, 40 cents each, 5 feet and over, 60 cents; HID lamps, $2.20 each; car and truck oil filters, 50 cents each and tractor oil filters, $1.
Businesses and farmers are invited to set up an appointment to bring their materials for collection Friday, Sept. 19, but must pre-register (715-386-4675). Small businesses WILL be charged. Farmers can bring up to 500 pounds of waste for free.
Waste not accepted
Unacceptable items are latex paint, waste oil, auto batteries, explosives, medical or infectious waste, radioactive materials and pressurized containers.
Appliance collections
Two appliance collections are scheduled Sept. 20 and are open to all county residents, one at:
Cost to drop off most appliances is $11; air conditioners and water softeners (no salt!), $16.
Appliances accepted for drop off include dehumidifiers, dishwashers, dryers, freezers, furnaces, garbage disposals, heat pumps, humidifiers, microwaves, refrigerators, stoves, trash compactors, washers, water heaters and gas grills ($5 more for the propane tank). No electronic items will be accepted. Call for prices on commercial, industrial or camper appliances.
