State cranberry crop looks to be 2nd best ever

Wisconsin’s cranberry growers are harvesting what could be their second-largest crop ever.

Wisconsin’s cranberry growers are harvesting what could be their second-largest crop ever.

The U.S. Agriculture Department predicts a yield of 3.85 million barrels, 4 percent more than a year ago.

Officials said last year’s brutal winter helped the crop, by putting protective coats of ice on the vines.

Cranberries bring an estimated $350 million a year to the state’s economy, with around 7,200 jobs.

The state’s cranberry growers association is working with Ocean Spray to encourage growers to expand their bogs to help meeting a growing foreign demand for the product.
