A recent letter to the editor from a supporter of the opponent of Rep. Kitty Rhoades included a laundry list of her votes against a variety of proposals considered during the last session of the Legislature.
Some of those proposals were bills, some were amendments, some were amendments to amendments, and some were “versions” of certain bills. The actual votes taken were not identified as to whether they were votes for final passage, a procedural vote, a committee vote — difficult to tell.
As a busy wife and mother with a full-time job and a variety of volunteer responsibilities, I simply don’t have the time to do the kind of research which was conducted by (or perhaps for) the letter writer. But I keep up with the Legislature’s activities, and specifically our local legislators, through newspaper, TV, radio and, yes, occasionally even Internet, coverage of the State Capitol. And, as radio commentator Paul Harvey used to say — “now, for the rest of the story.”
Throughout a two-year legislative session, which includes six weeks of Joint Finance Committee votes on the budget, Kitty Rhoades cast hundreds and hundreds of votes. Can I recite every roll call? No, of course not. But I know where Kitty stands on the issues that are most important to me like education, health care and taxes and I know she shares my values and concerns.
If I had the time, I’m sure I could pull out specific “yes” votes by Kitty on the very issues where the letter writer takes her task. It’s not difficult when the Joint Finance Committee is split evenly with eight Republican members and eight Democrat members to find a roll call to reinforce one side or the other. Yes, it’s important to know how she votes, but it’s even more important to know where Kitty Rhoades stands.
