Kids voices needed at HHS

Singers between the ages of 7 and 10 years are needed for the Hudson High School Choral Department’s production of “This Wondrous Night, the 2008 Home for the Holidays Concert” Dec. 15 at HHS. The concert will feature six high school choirs, the River City Symphony Orchestra and a children’s choir performing a variety of holiday music. Auditions for children are at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Vine St. All students will be expected to sing “My Country ’Tis of Thee” for their audition. An accompanist will be provided. Rehearsals are Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. beginning Nov. 6 at First Presbyterian Church. Voice lessons offered

Elizabeth Hawksford Schaefer will offer private voice lessons for ages 12 through adult at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Adults and homeschooled teenagers are especially welcome to call for available daytime openings. Schaefer’s instruction centers around the individual needs of her students. The fee is $25 per 30-minute lesson.

‘Sound of Music’ coming

The Phipps Center for the Arts is staging “The Sound of Music” Nov. 7-30 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Men are still needed for the cast for non-speaking, non-singing parts in the party and Nazi scenes — contact stage manager Paul Ashwood at (715) 386-6811. Tickets for the musical are $23 for adults and $16 for all students with a current ID, with a $2 discount for the opening weekend, and a $2 discount for seniors for the Sunday matinees.

Collage workshop set

Mixed Media and Acrylic Collage for new and returning students will be offered by Bonnie Cutts from Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 6-8, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Cutts was trained by Golden Artist Colors for their working artist program. Her workshops stress a wide range of techniques using acrylic materials. The class fee is $235.

Learn ballroom dancing

Ballroom dance parties will be offered Saturdays, Oct. 25, Nov. 15 and Dec. 20, 7:30 to 10 p.m., in the dance studio of The Phipps Center for the Arts. Tom Larson will offer a ballroom dance lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Cost is $10 per person.

Tai chi continues

Tai chi classes continue Thursdays, Oct. 16-Nov. 11, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at The Phipps Center for the Arts. This tai chi class trains participants to move more efficiently with the limitations they currently have. It will not correct damage from physical trauma or surgery, but it offers participants more productive ways to hold and move their bodies in alignment that allows relaxation and release from discomfort. Instructor Mark Tomlinson offers the Yang style long form of tai chi chuan – for beginning and experienced practitioners. The fee for eight sessions is $96.

Dancers, fiddlers perform

The American Swedish Institute Spelmanslag along with the North Star Nordic Dancers will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Included are traditional folk music of Sweden, primarily from the region of Dalarna. The Spelmanslag includes more than 40 fiddlers of all ages, from teenagers to octogenarians. Tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for all students with a current ID. On Saturday, Spirit of the St. Croix Days will be held in nearby Lakefront Park. Patrons are advised to arrive well in advance of the performance to find parking or take a shuttle bus from the outer lot of Plaza 94 on Coulee Road or the Welcome Center on Crest View Drive. Buses run every 15 minutes until 10 p.m.
