Based on the book by E. B. White, this musical adaptation is by the playwright Joseph Robinette, with music and lyrics by Charles Strouse, the composer of “Annie” and “‘Bye, ‘Bye, Birdie.”

The tale recounts the plight of Wilbur the pig, destined for the processing plant, and the efforts of Charlotte, a compassionate spider, determined to save him. The bond that develops between this unlikely pair serves as a touching example of true friendship.

A large cast will portray both human and animal characters. All actors will be asked to sing 16 to 24 measures of a prepared song showing their range, as well as read from the script. An accompanist will be provided. All should come dressed to move, with their hair tied back. Students should also come with a complete list of rehearsal conflicts.

The play will be directed by John H. Potter, who most recently mounted “East of the Sun and West of the Moon.” Music director Randi Rexroth and choreographer Jocelyn Gorham last staged “Pinocchio” together for The Phipps Children’s Theater.

Rehearsals begin the first week of January, six days per week, excluding Wednesdays. “Charlotte’s Web” runs for 12 performances Feb. 13-March 1 on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
