James Zimmerman, artistic director at St. Croix Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, is the playwright and composer for most of the music featured in the premiere of his country rock musical “Inn Between the Holidays,” running Nov. 28-Jan 3 at the Best Western Hudson House.
J. Michael Roy, a faculty member with Zimmerman at UW-River Falls, arranged the music and is the show’s music director.
“This is a family musical,” said Zimmerman. “It’s not the holiday show you’ve taken your kids to year after year. It’s fresh, new, has some songs that you’ll hum on the way out, and it’s been my mission while writing this to make sure the entire audience leaves our performance with the feeling of hope.”
As the show unfolds, it is Christmas season in Between, Ga. A lot can happen in a week, particularly if that week is between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve at the Inn Between, a little roadhouse bar, inn, and truck stop on the highway. It’s also a long way between “good” and “famous” for the local band that plays there. It’s an even longer way between poverty and prosperity for Jake and Jan, owners of the truck stop slammed by high fuel prices and stressed-out truckers, and it seems to be the longest road of all between fun and forever for Josh and Alexis. When you’re in Between, be careful what you wish for as you may just get it, especially at Christmas.
The show opens the day after Thanksgiving and runs most Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from Nov. 28 to Jan. 3. Tickets are $52 and include dinner, show, tip and tax – the show only is $40.
Dinner is served anytime between 6 and 7 p.m., with the curtain at 8. This show also has a children’s menu for ages 6-12 at a children’s price of $28.

There is also a special New Year’s Eve performance for $75 featuring a 13-piece swing and jazz dance band after the show until 1 a.m. The evening includes the show, an upscale dinner, dancing, party favors and champagne at midnight.
