St. Croix Storage warehouse destroyed in blazeFirefighters from more than 25 departments from western Wisconsin and Minnesota worked through the night to contain the fire at a 50,000-square-foot building that was once part of the historic North Hudson railroad shop yard.
Firefighters from more than 25 departments from western Wisconsin and Minnesota worked through the night to contain a blaze at a North Hudson warehouse.
Destroyed in the fire was a 50,000-square-foot building operated by St. Croix Storage and Transfer Co. Three semi trucks also burned.
Dan Barber of North Hudson is the general manager and president of St. Croix Storage.
Hudson Fire Chief Jim Frye said Friday morning that the building, located at 239 Monroe St. N., was filled with cardboard. It is located on the site of the historic North Hudson railroad shops.
Information on file with St. Croix County indicates the building, situated on five acres, is valued at $581,500.
A neighborhood resident reported the fire at about 11 p.m. Thurday after smelling smoke and then seeing the smoke coming from the warehouse.
Fire crews from as far away as North St. Paul, Minn., were called in to battle the blaze. It was contained by early Friday morning.
Aerial ladder trucks from Stillwater, Minn., and Bayport, Minn., were still raining streams of water on the warehouse as of 7:30 a.m. Friday. An aerial truck from River Falls also helped with the effort, according to Frye.
Hudson's aerial truck was being serviced and was unavailable for use.
The streets around the warehouse were clogged with fire engines from places including Lake Elmo, Minn., Roberts, Hammond, Prescott, Spring Valley, Ellsworth and more.
Water was shuttled to the scene from several hydrants around town -- including one at the corner of Locust and Third streets in Hudson -- due to the sheer volume being used. Temperatures dipped below zero after midnight and at 5 a.m., hovered at -5.
Debris from the fire has been found on rooftops and streets more than three-quarters of a mile southeast of the scene. The snow cover quickly extinguished the embers.
The building owner is listed as St. Croix Ventures, 2525 Nevada Ave. N., in Minneapolis.
More information on the blaze will be posted through the day.
