Kaufhold sentenced in snowmobile mishap

A town of Somerset man has been convicted of a felony in hit-and-run snowmobile accident nearly two years ago.

Scott James Kaufhold, 49, 1981 93rd St,. Somerset, pleaded no contest to one felony count of causing injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle Wednesday, Dec. 17. A felony count of first-degree reckless injury was dismissed in a plea agreement.

Judge Eric J. Lundell sentenced Kaufhold to 90 days in jail, five years probation and ordered him to pay $16,184.41 restitution. Kaufhold was also ordered to maintain absolute sobriety and his drivers' license was revoked for two years.

Kathleen L. Fredrickson, 47, New Richmond, was hit by a snowmobile driven by Kaufhold about 8 p.m. March 13, 2006 on County Rd. C near 114th St. in the town of Star Prairie.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's report of the incident said Fredrickson was struck from behind and thrown about 30 feet. She suffered two broken legs and was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Fredrickson and her husband were walking west on County C when the accident occurred.

Kaufhold told a deputy that he was traveling about 40 mph and thought he hit a deer or a sign, the criminal complaint said.
