The Somerset Police Department, Somerset Fire and Rescue and Lakeview Ambulance were dispatched to 820 Rivard St. at 7:37 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, on the report of a male suffering from a gunshot wound.
When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, near commercial buildings on the eastern edge of the village, they found a male on the ground. He had been discovered by members of his family.
According to a press release from the Somerset Police Department, efforts to resuscitate the teenager were unsuccessful. He was declared dead at the scene. The St. Croix County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and conducted a parallel investigation with police. The St. Croix County Sheriff's Department also provided assistance at the scene.
An investigation indicated that the young man suffered one gunshot wound, which was self-inflicted. The deceased teenager was identified as Bryan Aumann, 16, of Hudson.
Aumann was diagnosed with leukemia two and a half years ago. According to his family, he was shy and funny, an avid snowmobiler, dirt bike rider, hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his parents, Larry and Lena Aumann and his sister, Casey. Visitation and a funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church is set for Saturday, April 30.
Students and staff at HHS were notified on Wednesday morning of Aumann’s death and a letter was sent to parents from Principal Laura Love. Counselors and other staff members were and will continue to be available to students who need support. Students were also asked to report to a staff member any student they noticed who may need help for any reason.
Love also encouraged parents to talk with their children about Aumann’s death. She wrote, “In Memory of Bryan Aumann
