Laura Baker, 44, of Hudson died Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul after a months-long battle with cancer.
Born in Ottawa, Ill., on June 10, 1964, Laura spent her teen years in Eau Claire, where she attended Memorial High School.
Laura worked for Aurora Community Services in west central Wisconsin for nearly 20 years, helping developmentally disabled adults live active, happy lives.
A strong single mother, Laura stood for tolerance and justice, and her gracious, generous spirit was reflected in the wonderful collection of friends who came to see her off. Laura had a mischievous sense of humor, loved the color chartreuse, good chocolate, container gardening, Gracetone pottery, the stories of Agatha Christie, and music of all kinds — but especially Radiohead.
Her last months were brightened by the birth of her beloved granddaughter, Evelyn, with whom she spent many hours cuddling.
Laura’s maternal and paternal grandparents preceded her in death, as did her father, Storm Baker, who passed away in 1998.
She will be remembered with love by her mother, Jeanne Flyte of Eau Claire; her daughters, Storm Meier of Roseville, Minn., and Ivy Meier of Hudson; and her granddaughter, Evelyn Jeanne; her sister, Kristi Curry, and nephews, Tim and Kelly, all of Eau Claire. Also, of course, her fuzzy companions, Lou and Peaches, and all of her extraordinary friends, especially the Tom and Barb Pedersen family of Hudson.
“Love is above all, the gift of oneself” —Jean Anouilh.
A memorial gathering was Sunday, Jan. 4, from 4:30-6 p.m., with a memory-sharing service at 6 p.m., at the Bakken-Young Funeral Home in River Falls.
Arrangements were with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services of River Falls.
