Students had just gotten off their bus at Houlton Elementary School Tuesday morning and were inside the building when the vehicle caught fire and was engulfed in flames.

According to Hudson School District Communications Specialist Tracy Habisch-Ahlin, the bus driver was outside at the front of the bus cleaning off the headlights when she noticed smoke and then flames. No students were in or around the bus when the fire started, and the bus driver was not injured. The St. Joseph Fire Department responded to the call. The school is located on County E just east of Hwy. 35 in the town of St. Joseph.

The exact cause of the fire is being investigated. The bus is owned and operated by Safeway of Wisconsin, which supplies student transportation for the Hudson School District.
