YMCA Camp St. Croix begins dining hall renovation
YMCA Camp St. Croix has begun the renovation of its dining hall, with construction of a 2,000-square-foot addition to follow. YMCA volunteers, contractors and local officials were on hand Jan. 14 to officially kick off the project.

YMCA Camp St. Croix has begun the renovation of its dining hall, with construction of a 2,000-square-foot addition to follow.
YMCA volunteers, contractors and local officials were on hand Jan. 14 to officially kick off the project.
Gavic Construction is the general contractor for the project designed by Michael Huber Architects. Both are Hudson companies.
The dining hall project is the first major renovation being funded by the Building on Strong Foundations Capital Campaign. It is scheduled for completion prior to Camp St. Croix’s 100th anniversary celebration set for June 13, 2009.
The addition to the dining hall will provide a new entrance porch and vestibule, expanded accessible restrooms, an outdoor dining deck and an elevator.
The entire interior of the dining hall and lower-level classrooms is being remodeled. New Andersen windows and a new mechanical system will improve the building’s energy efficiency.
The dining hall is one of the camp’s most-used buildings. It operates year-round, providing three meals daily for hundreds of campers. The lower classrooms serve groups of 10 to 200 people.
The YMCA has raised $2.1 million in pledges from 64 donors toward a Building Strong Foundations goal of $4 million.
Volunteers will continue to seek donations throughout this centennial year for the camp.
“We are extremely pleased with the support from the foundations in the St. Croix Valley and are eager to have more individuals support this important campaign,” said John Marnell of Hudson, chair of the Camp St. Croix Board.
The YMCA hopes to reach its campaign goal by June 13. Campaign pledges can be paid over a three-year period and are tax deductible. Contributions of any size are welcomed.
The money raised in the capital campaign will be used to update many of the camp’s existing facilities, as well as add several new facilities to serve growing day camp programs.
Renovations to all of the camp’s lodging camps are planned, along with improvements to trails and adding an internal road to connect the day and resident camp sites.
A new welcome center, a restroom building and a summer water play area will also be constructed at the day camp site.
A new lodge will be built to serve teens participating in the camp’s year-round leadership development programs.
Camp St. Croix resident programs have grown from serving several hundred boys in 1909 to more than 1,500 boys and girls last summer.
It has held day camps since 1982. Last year, the day camps served more than 1,900 boys and girls from the St. Croix Valley.
YMCA camping programs teach core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Camp St. Croix served a total of more than 25,000 participants last year in its year-round camping programs, outdoor education programs for elementary school groups, and conferences and retreats for youths and adults.
