An early-morning fire Monday did heavy damage to a home owned by Dustin and Trisha Danielson at 705 Crosby Drive in the town of Hudson.

Hudson Fire Chief Jim Frye said the blaze appeared to start in the entry area of the home on the south side of the structure. There were people at home when the fire began and they were able to escape without injury.

Frye said there was extensive fire, smoke and water damage, but he thought the structure is salvageable.

“There was heavy damage, but our guys were able to save this one,” Frye said.

Neighbor Mike Frase said the Danielson family was awakened by a smoke alarm and was able to escape the house and remove a car from the garage. The family’s children were kept warm in the car until help arrived.

Frase said another neighbor — Donovan and Kimberly Harmon — had let their dog out just before 3 a.m. and the dog began barking. Upon further investigation by the Harmons, they discovered flames were coming from the Danielson house. Frase soon awoke and also was on the scene to help assist the family before firefighters arrived.

The Hudson Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Lower St. Croix Valley and Roberts/Warren. The River Falls Fire Department was on standby at the Hudson fire station. The first call came at 2:50 a.m. Monday.
