Raider goaltender Alise Riedel stopped 36 of the 38 shots she faced in last Tuesday girls’ hockey sectional semifinal in Hayward, but two goals was all the Hurricanes needed to end the Raiders’ season with a 2-1 victory.

Hayward went on to lose to the St. Croix Valley Fusion, 6-3, in Friday night’s sectional final in Hudson while the Raiders’ season came to an end with a record of 10-12.

All the scoring in last Tuesday’s semifinal contest came in the first period. Hayward/Spooner’s Alyssa Ahlgren opened the scoring just under seven minutes into the game and sister Kelly Ahlgren gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead with a power play goal less than four minutes later. Hannah Turnbull assisted on both goals.

The Raiders cut the Hurricanes’ lead in half with an unassisted, power play goal by Bonnie Meyer at the 14:38 mark of the first period.

Riedel and Hurricane goaltender Amberly Norton shut the door the rest of the way. Riedel stopped all 26 shots she faced over the final two periods while Norton made 11 of her 15 saves in the same time frame.

Hayward/Spooner outshot the Raiders 38-16. Hudson was penalized twice for four minutes and allowed one power play goal while Hayward/Spooner was whistled for three penalties for six minutes. The Raiders scored their only goal on a power play.
