Parents and guardians of more than 370 new kindergarten students showed up at the Hudson School District’s kindergarten registration last week at Hudson Prairie Elementary School.
Stressing that these are just the registration numbers so far for the upcoming school year, the district released the following numbers:
Total — 376 students
According to District Communications Specialist Tracy Habisch-Ahlin, the district’s history indicates that the above numbers will go up somewhat before the start of school in the fall. The number currently stands at about 10 less than the kindergarten enrollment last September. “We would expect to start the 2009 school year with a similar, if not increased enrollment, to 2008.”
Kindergarten enrollment in fall 2008 broke down as follows:
Total—386
The Hudson School Board is currently considering a change in the school boundaries for River Crest and Rock elementary schools in an effort to balance enrollment between the two schools and keep class sizes within district guidelines. River Crest, which opened its doors this fall, is at 92 percent capacity with both kindergarten and second grade at or above class size guidelines. The enrollment is 544 with all 24 of its classrooms in use. Enrollment at Rock Elementary is 430, 72 percent of capacity, with 20 of its 24 classrooms occupied.
The board is expected to take action on the issue at its March 10 board meeting at River Crest beginning at 6:30 p.m.
