A Baldwin man died late Sunday afternoon when a vehicle left a Town of Emerald road in St. Croix County, struck trees and rocks, then caught fire with the driver still trapped inside.
Cory S. Johnson, 32, Baldwin, was pronounced dead at the scene by the county medical examiner.
Three people who came across the crash attempted to extricate Johnson from the vehicle and put out the fire, but they were unable to due to the intense fire.
St. Croix County authorities were alerted to the crash at 4:02 p.m. Sunday, July 31, and a paramedic from Baldwin was at the scene within eight minutes but he reported the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters from United Fire’s Baldwin and Hammond stations reported at 4:18 that the fire had been extinguished but there was a body inside the vehicle. The victim was later identified as Johnson by use of dental records.
The crash location was just east of Highway 63 on 140th Avenue and about a mile south of CTH G. The crash remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office.
The crash is the sixth fatality of 2011 in St. Croix County.
