Artists for high school show

Submissions from artists are currently being sought for the annual Area High School Art Exhibition, on view April 4-26 in The Galleries. All high school-age students from western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota are invited to submit one recent original work in any media. Art teachers whose students are participating in the show are invited to submit one piece of their own artwork for a concurrent exhibition in The Commons.

All submissions must meet the specified guidelines and be dropped off at The Phipps on Tuesday, March 31, or Wednesday, April 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Guidelines are available at www.ThePhipps.org, or by calling Anastasia Shartin at (715) 386-2305, ext. 103. High-schoolers may also apply for the Alice M. Stolpe Scholarship for the Arts.

Private violin lessons

Private violin lessons for students ages 7-adult are offered throughout the year by Sarah Bertsch, (715) 381-5735.

Private voice lessons

Elizabeth Hawksford Schaefer offers private voice lessons for ages 12-adult. Adults and homeschooled teenagers are especially welcome to call for available daytime openings. For more information, call The Phipps center at (715) 386-2305, ext. 101.

Ballroom dance parties

Tom Larson will offer ballroom dance parties Saturday, March 21 and April 18, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the dance studio. Larson will offer a ballroom dance lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Refreshments are provided. Admission is $10 per person.

Yoga classes

Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue Thursdays, 6:30–8 p.m. Beginning yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays, 9-10:30 a.m. Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $120 per 10 classes. Punch-cards are good for any of the three classes offered each week. Students only pay for the classes they attend. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Photography club

The Western Wisconsin Photographic Club meets regularly at The Phipps. Photographers of all levels of ability and experience are invited to these meetings. For more information, contact Margaret Strehlo, (715) 386-5048.

Mosaic classes

Local mosaic artist Wouterina “Riana” de Raad is offering a Mosaic Workshop ($145) on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Students will learn how to cut and break glass and ceramic tile, grouting and more.

Rosemaling

Marlys Hammer is teaching Beginning Rosemaling on March 27 and 28 and Advanced Rosemaling April 17-19. For more details, visit www.ThePhipps.org or call (715) 386-2305.

Theater classes for children

Claudia Haas is teaching theater classes for students in grades 1-6 are offered on four Saturday mornings, April 4, 18, 25 and May 2. Flights of Fancy, for students in grades 1-3, runs from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Characters Wanted, for students in grades 4-6, runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Each class fee is $39.

Healing Arts at Hudson Hospital

Currently on display are the works of Teita Amberg, Chuck Avery, Robyn Stoller Awend, Bernel Bayliss, Barbara Bend, Patricia Lange, Andrea Larson, Susan McDonald, Tom McGregor, Chris Meyer, Gregg Rochester and David Sebberson.

Gallery exhibits

“Ordinary/Extraordinary: The Art and Life of Stories,” an exhibition of visual storytelling by artists from across the globe, will be on view in The Galleries through March 29. In this exhibition, artists from Liberia, Russia, Japan, the Midwest, East Coast and Belgium use painting, drawing, mixed media and video to bring to life all sorts of stories, both real and imagined. Artists are Susan Armington, James Disney, Heidi Hafermann, Catherine Kennedy, Tadashi Onoda, Alexandra Rozenman and Marie Simcox. A free artist roundtable discussion on sources of artistic inspiration is scheduled Sunday, March 29, 2 to 4 p.m. in The Galleries. Galleries hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.

The Gift Gallery

The Gift Gallery offers unique fine art and traditional crafts by noted area artists. Gift certificates are also available.
