Phipps offers summer theater camps

Theater camps for youths in grades 3-10 will be offered by area professionals this summer at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Each class will perform for family and friends on the final day of class.

Theater camps for youths in grades 3-10 will be offered by area professionals this summer at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Each class will perform for family and friends on the final day of class.

Drama Camp (grades 3 and 4) runs Monday-Friday, June 15-19, and again, July 20-24, from 9 a.m. to noon each day, for a fee of $135. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Students will explore acting, creating characters, improvisation and performance techniques.

Acting Ensemble (grades 5 and 6) is Monday-Friday, June 15-19, and again, July 20-24, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day, for a fee of $135. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Students will work on acting techniques, improvisation, character development and performance techniques. The Acting Ensemble will create a performance piece inspired by student ideas and classroom improvisations.

The instructors are Diane Landis, a director, actress and teacher in the Twin Cities for over 20 years; and Cynthia Hechter, a drama teacher for over 20 years.

Musical Theater Camp (grades 7-10) runs Monday-Friday, July 13-17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp is an intensive week of training in all aspects of musical theater for students with all levels of experience. The program offers classes in acting, vocal technique, dance and movement, as well as auditioning. Cost is $265. Enrollment is limited. Students should bring a bag lunch.

Musical Theater Camp instructors are Mark Rosenwinkel, an acting instructor and director with over 20 years of acting experience; acting instructor Landis; vocal instructor Betsy Benjamin, a theater and commercial actor and teacher; and dance instructor Heidi Spesard-Noble, a performer and choreographer.
