Letter: School share is just right

Dear Editor,

I appreciate both Mayor Knudson and the Star Observer editor’s support for the police school liaison officer. I believe strongly in the value of this position to both the city and the school district.

Officer Crimmins is an outstanding officer and role model for our young people. My issue with the city regards their recent determination that somehow the school district has begun receiving more benefit, and therefore is responsible for the majority of the cost.

There is no measure by which the city can determine that the school district benefits disproportionately. The school district will receive appropriate law enforcement services from the city of Hudson whether it pays anything or not.

The school district, however, recognizes the benefits of our collaboration and partnership, and I believe the school district should share the cost equally with the city of Hudson. In fact, only one district in the Big Rivers Conference contributes more the 50 percent of the cost of this position.

It is my hope that a new agreement will be made to continue this mutually beneficial partnership.
