Letter: Must take country back

Our inheritance is being stolen! In his “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr. compared our heritage of liberty to a promissory note: “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a
promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
“This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” In addition to the sacrifices and persecutions that took place during the Civil Rights Movement, hundreds of thousands of Americans gave their lives in defending and preserving our sacred rights. For generations, Americans have been celebrating and giving thanks for our blessings of liberty and honoring those “architects” of freedom and limited government.
Our representatives in Washington do neither. By their actions they dishonor and show contempt for those “magnificent words.” They sign legislation that they haven’t even bothered to read; pass laws that are incompatible with a free people. They deplete our treasury and reward themselves and enrich their friends while obligating our children and grandchildren into a lifetime of servitude.
They debase our currency and deprive us of the fruits of our labor. They disregard the clear language of our Constitution and impose upon us policies contrary to it, polices derived from a foreign ideology, an ideology that always keeps company with tyranny and poverty.
King warned against complacency: “It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment.” The urgency of this moment is to take back our country from those whose actions define them as tyrants; and replace them with people who are faithful to the Constitution and worthy of our trust. The object being to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity” so that our offspring need not experience the inhumanity of a society completely regulated by the state.
