MADISON - Hudson won its first dual meet at the WIAA Team State Tournament Friday by winning its last match.
The Raiders' Gordon Johnson went up a weight class to 125 to clinch the Division 1 quarterfinal, dual meet win 32-29 over Holmen at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse.
The middle weight classes helped Hudson, 12-4 overall, build a 25-6 (the meet's starting weight class was 130) lead. Winning their matches were Tanner Owens at 140, Kolya Hawksford at 145, Ryan Smith at 152, Nick Larson at 160 and Derek Schindler at 171. Laron won by pin in 2:44 and the rest all won by major decision.
But Holmen, 12-6 overall, rallied all the way back to tie the score at 29-29. The Vikings won five of the next seven matches but Hudson scored two critical wins, at 112 where Nick Nelson avoided a potential pinfall won his match by a 19-11 major decision over Avery Hackett and Johnson's meet winning decision in the last match against Ryan Stalsberg by a 4-0 score.
Also winning for the Raiders was Austin Koski at 130 by a 9-4 decision over Sam Schank.
Next up for the Raiders are the Raiders of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, No. 1 ranked and one of the nation's top 25 teams, let alone the state's. The state semifinal dual begins at 9 a.m. Lincoln was 56-8 winner over Hartford in their semifinal. Other semifinals results were: Hartland Arrowhead 36, Kenosha Tremper 32 and Mukwonago 34, Franklin 21
