Willow River Elementary Music and Art Show is Friday

This Friday (April 17) marks the fifth annual Willow River Elementary Music and Art Show, which features work by both students and community artists as well as musical performances and food.

Students, teachers and parent volunteers work throughout the year to prepare for the event that raises money to provide educational opportunities of all kinds at the school. Parent Genie Castro has been organizing the event since it began five years ago and is being assisted this year by parent Jane Richards.

Parent volunteers work with students and the classroom teachers to create a group project for each class. Students also exhibit individual work. The theme of this year’s show is “Record, Remix, Recreate.” Students in each of the classrooms worked with parent volunteers to create a class project using recycled materials.

“This year’s theme for the show is an environmentally friendly one with creations made out of recycled items, so there will be some out-of-the-box, one-of-a-kind art pieces,” said Castro.

The show also includes work by artists from the community that will be for sale at a silent auction. Castro said the work for sale includes a nice selection of paintings, prints, watercolors, pottery and glass. There will also be T-shirts, jewelry and purses. Artists donate 25 percent of any sales to the school.

Student musicians, under the direction of music teacher Lindsey Andress, will perform throughout the evening.

As in the past, hors d’oeuvres will be served. Parent Kristen Johnson is in charge of coordinating food.

Organizers encourage the community to attend. The event is sponsored by the Willow River Parent Group. The school is located at 1118 Fourth St.
