Several Summer Art Camp classes that are being offered for the first time this year are open for enrollment at The Phipps Center for the Arts.
For students ages 12 to 18, there are two new classes with instructor Mary Perrizo-Peterson to encourage creative exploration. Cost is $119 per class and includes materials: “Instant Challenges – Art!” Monday-Friday, June 22-26, 10 a.m. to noon. Students will create an interesting work of art each day from a surprise set of instructions and materials. “Nature Journaling: A Creative Way of Seeing,” Monday-Friday, June 22-26, 1 to 3 p.m. Participants will get mini-instructional lessons on drawing as well as observational and writing techniques, and will spend outside time observing and recording their environment.
Other classes “Dinosaurs in Space,” for ages 6 to 9, is offered twice: from 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 29-July 3 and July 6-10. The instructor is Abbi Allan, who teaches at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the College of Visual Arts and the Science Museum of Minnesota. Participants will ask dozens of “What if?” questions to spark their interest in dinosaurs.Returning this year with a new set of classes using waste and recycled materials is Christopher Lutter-Gardella of Puppet Farm Arts. He is offering two full-day, weeklong classes ($239 each): “Glove Puppets (from trash!)” for ages 7 and older Monday-Friday, June 29-July 3, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Students will use the wadded-plastic/papier mache technique to produce their own glove puppet character and stage a demonstration. “Big is Beautiful!” for ages 10 and older Monday-Friday, Aug. 10-14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will make a spectacle theater art-piece incorporating large three-pole puppets, dragons, giant birds, fish and more. Other classes by Lutter-Gardella are “Homemade House” for ages 10 and older Monday-Friday, July 27-31, 9 a.m.-noon; “Junk Box Robots” for ages 7 and older Monday-Friday, July 27-31, 1-4 p.m.; and “Insect Aliens – Interstellar Entomology!” Monday-Friday, Aug. 3-7, 9 a.m.-noon, for ages 6 to 9, and 1-4 p.m. for ages 8 to 13.
