Black smoke and the smell of burning rubber filled the air around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning as flames consumed a red, Chevrolet SUV parked on the east side of Hwy. 12 just north of I-94 at exit 4.

Witnesses on scene said they saw fire in the vehicle’s front-tire wheel wells then noticed a man running down the roadside hill toward the TA Travel Center truck stop.

A St. Croix County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived at the scene first, blocking cars from moving northbound on Hwy. 12 and from turning that way from the I-94 exit ramp.

Firefighters from Hudson and Roberts Warren arrived within minutes and quickly extinguished the fire.
