Hudson Physicians is now offering personal lab services, known in the medical field as direct access testing. The service gives consumers access to a limited number of laboratory tests and screenings at a lower cost without having to first talk with a health care provider.

“Since many individuals may wish to have more frequent lab testing than their health care insurance plans cover, or are uninsured or have a high deductible, personal lab services allows people to assess their health regularly with lower out-of-pocket expense,” said Becky Waller, director of laboratory services for Hudson Physicians.

“It may also be beneficial for individuals who are away from their primary care provider or provider network so they can obtain needed laboratory testing.”

Some of the available tests include hemoglobin, pregnancy or blood glucose, each available for $10; complete blood count for $20; lipid screening for $25; and a general health screen panel of tests for $70.

Those wanting to order personal lab services must be 18 years of age and show a photo ID at the time of service. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. A doctor’s order is not required, and no appointment is needed. Fees must be paid in advance and insurance will not be billed for services. Test results will be mailed back to the consumer within five working days, and it is encouraged that individuals share results with their health care provider.

Personal lab services are available at the Hudson Physicians clinic laboratory, 403 Stageline Road, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
