Big Ring Flyers host time trials

The Big Ring Flyers hosted their seventh annual Time Trial Bicycle Road Race last week. Bjorn Selander of Hudson took first place overall by almost one minute on the 20-mile course, located near the Bass Lake Cheese Factory.

Bjorn Selander of Hudson took first place overall by almost one minute on the 20-mile course, located near the Bass Lake Cheese Factory. Selander’s time was 40 minutes, 58 seconds, an average of almost 30 miles per hour. His nearest rival was Ian Stanford of Winona, who clocked in at 41:41.

Selander, who races for Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Team, was taking a well-earned break before he went back on the circuit and will be racing right on through the fall at competitions throughout the world.

A record turnout of 80 competitors from all over the Midwest competed at last week’s race in Hudson. On the female side the overall winner was Joan Carlson of Menomonie with a time of 50:41. Big Ring Flyer Julie Phelps of De Pere took second in 53:35.

Other Big River Flyer medal winners included Elmer Colyer, seventh overall and first in his age category, Kyle Schmidt 18th and first, Dave Goetzinger 20th and second, Vince Meyer 23rd and third, Dave Oachs 24th and third, and Bob Barabe 41st and third.

In the female division, Andrea Pontyondy-Smith was third and first, Natalee Colyer fifth and second, Teri Larson sixth and first, Tina Raehsler ninth and second, and Lori Mueller 14th and first.

Other Big Ringers that gave a good showing of themselves were Jeff Colbeth 19th, Michael Buelter 22nd overall, Chris Mueller 25th, Nate Phelps 32nd, Bob Maki 39th, Dave Bogenhagen 49th, Dan Johnson 50th, Varick Olson 52nd, and William Johnson 60th.

Portions of the money raised will go to the St. Joseph’s Fire and EMT departments. The race was in part supported by the Hudson Lions Club, Mama Maria’s, Rudy Project, Norwood Dental, County Cycles, Meyer Design Service, Hammer Nutrition, De Feet and Ritchey.
