Director comments on ‘Sherlock Holmes’ at Phipps

The Phipps Center for the Arts is staging “Sherlock Homes: The Final Adventure” Sept. 11-27. The play is adapted by Steven Dietz, based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle.

In the play, the soon-to-be-married King of Bohemia faces blackmail by opera singer Irene Adler. The king’s dilemma stems from a notorious photograph of the two together. With companion Doctor Watson at his side, Holmes pursues first the case and then the affections of Miss Adler. To solve this case, however, Holmes must be clever enough to outsmart his longtime adversary Professor Moriarty.

Director Keith Isaacson of St. Paul has been involved with theater and The Phipps for many years. He has previously staged "Drop Dead," "Angel Street," "Towards Zero," "Ten Little Indians," “Over the River and Through the Woods” and many other titles for The Phipps.

The show is coming along very well, according to Isaacson. The cast consists of Phipps veterans as well as newcomers. The director describes the set as “England at the turn of century with a relaxed Victorian feel. The set is great fun. The lights and sounds are all part of the show. The concepts of time and space move back and forth which makes it very interesting and theatrical.”
