A man accused of breaking into a home, impersonating a law officer and shooting a couple made an initial appearance in St. Croix County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon.
Justin Glen Rott, 26, Eau Claire, appeared in court via closed circuit television from the jail. Judge Scott R. Needham ordered him to post $100,000 cash bail and set a preliminary hearing for Thursday, Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
Rott was charged with felony counts of armed robbery with use of force, attempted armed robbery, armed burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon, impersonating a peace officer, first degree reckless injury and aggravated battery.
Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said deputies served an arrest warrant on Rott at the Eau Claire County Jail where he was being held on a probation violation. He was booked into the St. Croix County jail Sept. 3.
Hillstead said the break-in occurred on Aug. 1. Maria Erickson was shot in the leg and her husband Tom Erickson was shot in the stomach when an intruder broke into their home at 640 Main St., Wilson about 11 p.m. The couple was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment.
The intruder broke through the door and came directly to the basement where the Ericksons had their bedroom. He was wearing a baseball hat, mask or bandana over his face, camouflage pants, a dark T-shirt with sheriff printed on the chest and armed with a long gun, the sheriff’s report said.
He said he was from the sheriff’s department and demanded their cash and drugs.
“That’s when the Ericksons became suspicious and realized the suspect was not law enforcement. They asked to see his badge,” Hillstead said.
“There were five shots fired form a .22-caliber gun. One hit Maria in the leg, one grazed Tom’s right forearm and one hit him in the stomach,” the sheriff said.
