The fourth qualifying event of the 2009 Professional Musky Tournament Trail-Musky Hunter Magazine’s Fall Showdown was held on the St. Croix River near Hudson on Sept. 12-13.
Over 160 anglers registered to participate in the event and the St. Croix River was a new destination to the Professional Musky Tournament Trail. A total of 33 total muskies was registered with 29 of those being between 40 to 50-inch class fish. There were 24 muskies registered on Saturday and nine muskies on Sunday.
Tony Grant of Frenchburg, Kentucky, and Dave Schultz of Merrill figured out two different patterns to use while pre-fishing prior to the event. The pair of anglers used Top Raider surface lures and Jake crank baits to entice muskies that were 39, 40.25, 46.75 and 50 inches.
The three muskies that were caught on the Top Raiders were found near shore in just a couple of feet of water. Trolling with Jake crank bait produced a 50-inch musky which was the big fish of the day for Saturday
The two anglers also won the prestigious Ranger Cup award for an extra $1,000 which goes to the top registered Ranger Boat owner at each event and took home the first place trophies and over $11,500 in cash.
Second place went to Todd Hess and Chris Klund both of Hudson. The two anglers fish the St. Croix River regularly and were very aware of the potential for big fish.
These two anglers used Top Raider surface lures to coax their muskies into biting. Their presentation consisted of very shallow water fishing sometimes letting the lure land on the bank then retrieving the lure occasionally getting a strike on the first few cranks of the retrieve. The two had six strikes from muskies during the event and landed three of them. The sizes of the muskies that were released were 40.50, 41 and 41.25 inches and were enough to give them a second place finish.
Third place went to Justin Teske of Delano, Minn. and Adam Glickman of Montrose, Minn.
Fourth place was won by Gene Erickson of Addison, Mich.
Rounding out the top five was the team of Jared Severson and Chad Maves of Elmwood.
Another Hudson team of Trevor Lundgren and Chad Freiberg took ninth with one fish that was 49.5 inches.
