Fiddler’ performance added

“Fiddler on the Roof,” will be performed through Nov. 29 at The Phipps Center for the Arts. To accommodate ticket demand, a performance has been for Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Rich in historical and ethnic detail, the play has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth, and honesty. Its universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion.

The best ticket availability is for the added performance on Nov. 19. Performances will be given through Nov. 29 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. as well as Sundays at 2 p.m. on the main stage, although ticket availability is extremely limited.

Tickets are $23 for adults and $16 for all students with a current ID, with a $2 discount for seniors on the Sunday matinees. Reservations may be made by contacting The Phipps ticket office at (715) 386-8409.

’Madeline’ at Phipps in December

“Madeline’s Christmas,” produced by The Phipps Children’s Theater, will have a special limited run this holiday season.

“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. They left the house at half-past nine in two straight lines, in rain or shine. The smallest one was Madeline.” So begins the story of “Madeline’s Christmas,” with its book and lyrics by Jennifer Kirkeby, music by Shirley Mier, based on the book by Ludwig Bemelmans.

Only five performances will be given on the main stage Dec. 10–13 on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m., as well as Sunday at 2 p.m. The running time for the show is approximately one hour.

Tickets are $13 for all youth 18 years and younger and $15 for adults.

Annual meeting at Phipps

The Phipps Center for the Arts will hold its annual members’ meeting on Monday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. in the River Room.

Any adult who made a monetary contribution to The Phipps Center after Oct. 28, 2008, is a member during the 2009 calendar year.

The agenda will include the election of a director-at-large who will represent the membership on the board of directors.

Private violin lessons

Private violin lessons for students ages 7-adult are offered throughout the year by Sarah Bertsch, (715) 381-5735.

Private voice lessons

Elizabeth Hawksford Schaefer offers private voice lessons for ages 12-adult. Adults and homeschooled teenagers are especially welcome to call for available daytime openings. For more information, call The Phipps center at (715) 386-2305, ext. 101.

Dance classes

Dance technique classes for children and adults began in September and continue through May 2010. Students can now register for the second quarter of ballroom dance, salsa/Latin, jazz/hip-hop, musical theater, tap, ballet, lyrical, modern, preballet/tap, and bharatanatyam (South Indian classical dance). The class year is divided into four quarters of eight weeks each. All instructors are experienced as both educators and performers.Reduced rates are available for two successive quarters for all classes except salsa, ballroom and bharatanatyam. Fees are due one week prior to the first class of each quarter (eight weeks).

Ballroom dance parties

Ballroom dance parties will be offered on Saturdays, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19, from 7-10 p.m. in the dance studio. Tom Larson will offer a ballroom and Latin dance lesson during the first hour. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Admission is $12 per person.

Yoga classes

Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue Thursdays, 6:30–8 p.m. Beginning yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays, 9-10:30 a.m.

Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $120 per 10 classes. Punch-cards are good for any of the three classes offered each week. Students only pay for the classes they attend. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Photography club

The Western Wisconsin Photographic Club meets regularly at The Phipps. Photographers of all levels of ability and experience are invited to these meetings. For more information, contact Margaret Strehlo, (715) 386-5048.

Healing Arts at Hudson Hospital

The work of Martin Corbett, Toni Easterson, Lindsy Halleckson, Margaret Holmes, Peter Landherr, Douglas K. Limon, Michael McGraw, David Mngodo, Jodi Reeb-Myers, Elisabeth Paper, Odessa, Victoria Demos Stevens, Hazel Stoeckeler, Michon Weeks, and Terry Zenk is currently on display.

The Galleries

A series of exhibitions featuring work by area artists Elizabeth Kuth (Duluth), David Mataya (Hudson), Frank Quadflieg (Hudson), Jan Shoger (Northfield, Minn.), and Glenn Quist (Elk River, Minn.) is on view through Dec. 6.

Also on view in the Atrium Gallery through Jan. 3 is “Working Systems: What are Sustainable Artmaking Practices?,” an exhibition by artists who participated in a series of seminars organized by The Phipps on the role of art and sustainability. Participating artists are Gloria Adrian (Cushing), Barbara Riegel Bend (New Richmond), Sheila Bergman (Prairie Farm, Wis.), Mary Bergs (Minneapolis), Karla Faith (New Richmond), Patty Kuebker Johnson (Roberts), Amy Klein (St. Croix Falls), Bernard Marks (Somerset), and Teri Power (Amery)

The Gift Gallery

The Gift Gallery offers unique fine art and traditional crafts by noted area artists. Gift certificates are also available.

“A Gift by the Hand,” the annual holiday sale of handmade items by local and regional artists, is going on now through Dec. 31. Members of The Phipps receive a 10 percent discount throughout the remainder of the sale.

“A Gift by the Hand” hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters. The Phipps will be closed Nov. 26, and Dec. 24 through 27.
