Reconsider disc golf

Dear Editor,
I hope the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources can find some good reasons – and some money – to rescind its decision to close the disc golf course at Willow River State Park.
After living for 20 years in St. Croix County and moving to the Des Moines, Iowa, metro area, I’ve discovered an 18-hole disc golf course in a state park not far from where we live.
Big Creek State Park is open year-round and encourages the use of its disc golf course. Not only that, but the park offers a swimming beach, fishing, boating and picnicking. There is even a clearing where people can fly powered model planes on tethers.
All of this happens in a park much like Willow River, serving a metro area of more than half a million people. Best of all, admission to Iowa state parks is free.
Somehow, they’re managing to do it all. Perhaps there are some useful lessons here for the Wisconsin DNR.
