A pizza-man for over 25 years, E.J. Utech purchased Barley’s Pizza and Pasta from Kurt Tewinkel in July of 2007.
This year, Utech raised the pizza bar by becoming Red’s Savoy Pizza of Hudson. Savoy’s, a long time pizza phenomenon in St. Paul for over 40 years, began to share their secret sauce and ingredients along with the use of their name. Notice it is not the recipe for the distinctive tangy sauce, they are sharing. That remains a secret.
This weekend the Utechs’ are celebrating with a three day grand reopening Nov. 27- 30, including a pizza buffet special on Black Friday.
“Red’s Savoy Pizza has a big reputation in the Twin Cities,” said Utech. “It is very, very good pizza and we wanted a better pizza than I was able to offer before.”
“It is mainly the sauce that sets it apart,” said Utech. “It is a little spicier and another specialty is the ground sausage.” The pizza is old style traditional thin crust.
“We are the only original Red’s Savoy Pizza in Hudson,” said Utech, who has joined a relatively small circle of shops now offering the original in the Twin Cities metro area. Another favorite is the combination of sauerkraut and sausage as toppings on the original pizza “Pie”.
Utech is no stranger to the pizza business, at one point he considered changing career paths, but pizza won out.
“I love the business, you get a chance to meet and talk with the customers,” said Utech, a Minnesota native who now lives in Hudson. “You get to know some of them on a regular basis.”
Red’s Savoy offers delivery within an eight mile radius of their restaurant. Along with the new pizza menu, they continue to offer sandwiches, gyros, pasta, desserts and appetizers. They also serve beer.
The dough and cheese is made and grated fresh daily on site. All of it combines to offer the best pizza Hudson could have, according to Utech.
It is a family business, including three sons who are working with April and E.J.
The Original Red’s Savoy Pizza in Hudson is open Sunday through Thurs. 11a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. They are located in 1830 Webster Street.
