The first Hudson High School Empty Bowl Dinner organized by the school’s Social Justice League and the Purple Tree raised more than $1,100 for area food shelves after expenses.

The first Hudson High School Empty Bowl Dinner organized by the school’s Social Justice League and the Purple Tree raised more than $1,100 for area food shelves after expenses.

According to club advisor and school counselor Elizabeth Smith, more than 200 people were served soup, bread and dessert for a free will offering at the event Friday night.

Empty Bowl dinners are being held nationwide to draw attention to the issue of hunger in communities across the country. A similar event sponsored by Youth Action Hudson was held last spring. Guests are provided with hand-thrown bowls for their soup. When the 100 bowls were gone, regular soup bowls were used. The event received support from County Market, Keys Restaurant, San Pedro Café, Hudson Bagel, Pier Five Hundred, the Hudson Chamber of Commerce, Youth Action Hudson, Tracey Habisch-Ahlin, Jason Lund and the art departments at HHS and UW-River Falls and The Phipps Center. Kristin Nyquist is the co-advisor of the HHS Social Justice League with Smith.
