The Hudson girls’ hockey team ran its unbeaten streak to eight with a 3-2 win over the Winona Winhawks last Tuesday at Hunt Arena on the campus of UW-River Falls.
The Raiders, now 7-0-1, are ranked fourth in the state in the latest Wisconsin Girls Hockey Top Ten.
As has been the pattern for several of their recent games, Hudson fell behind early in their latest win as Winona’s Carly Moran scored 2:41 into the first period.
Raider goalie Danni Krinke stopped two breakaways later in the period while the Raiders were on a power play. Shortly after the power play expired, Hudson’s Bonnie Meyer skated through the Winona defense and fired a hard wrist shot from between the top of the circles that beat Winona goalie Lindsay Cafferty high on her stick side to tie the score with just under two minutes remaining in the period.
Winona countered 6:25 into the second on a goal by Autumn Hayes to take a 2-1 lead, but Hudson’s Emily Stankevitz tipped in a shot from the blue line at 13:24 of the second period to tie the score again, 2-2. Sarah Mullins and Alex Willi assisted on the goal.
It appeared that Hudson had taken a 3-2 lead with six minutes left in the game when Willi put the puck in the goal. However, one of the referees had lost sight of the puck and had blown the play dead. Meyer then scored her second goal just over three minutes later to seal the 3-2 victory for Hudson.
Krinke stopped 24 of the 26 shots she faced while Cafferty made 25 saves.
The Raiders are putting their unbeaten record on the line this week at the Schwan Holiday Cup Tournament in Blaine, Minn. Action began Monday, Dec. 28 and will wrap up Wednesday, Dec. 30.
