Elaine F. ‘Red’ Laughnan, 90

Mrs. Sidney (Elaine Frances Riley) Laughnan, lovingly known by many as “Red”, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the American Heritage Care Center.

Red was born on Feb. 8, 1919, in Ellsworth, the daughter of John “Jack” and Elsie (Murphy) Riley. She was raised in Ellsworth where she attended elementary school and graduated from Ellsworth High in 1937 followed by a post graduate class as well. She was united in marriage to Sidney Laughnan at St. Frances Catholic Church by Fr. Mulligan in Ellsworth on April 11, 1940. To this union four children were born: Peggie Ann, John Edward, Linda Marie, and Patrick Donald.

Although a dedicated homemaker, she worked as a waitress for several restaurants in the Hudson area. Restaurants including Itty Bite, Sam’s Recreation, Hudson Hotel, Dibbos, and the Hudson Harbor. She enjoyed playing softball, especially pitching for Sunny’s Honeys. She loved her beloved poodle dogs. She enjoyed reading, keeping tabs on her favorite soap opera, and yelling at the TV when the Price Is Right was on. She was no slouch in the kitchen as her secret recipe for spaghetti sauce and meatballs rivaled the best. Finally, she enjoyed playing euchre and cards with her family and friends.

Red will forever be fondly remembered by her children, Peggie Ann (Ed) Hawkins, Jack (Kathy) Laughnan, Linda (Gene) Dahlby, Pat (Beth) Laughnan; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Frances Swanson;, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney; sisters, Marie Johnson, LaVine Witsoe, and Leona Crain.

Mass of Christian Burial for Elaine F. "Red" Laughnan will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson with Father Dan Dahlberg officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to mass at church, and also from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Parish Cemetery.
