St. Croix County Supervisor Daryl Standafer recently attended the Wisconsin Counties Association Legislative Exchange in Madison. The event brought together county officials from around the state to discuss key issues facing Wisconsin counties.

Among the presenters at the exchange were Todd Berry from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance; Michael Morgan, Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Administration; J.B. Van Holien, Attorney General, State of Wisconsin; and various legislative leaders from both the Wisconsin Assembly and State Senate.

The legislative exchange focused on financial and policy issues critical to WCA members. Special attention was devoted to the economy and budgets, and county service delivery in tough economic times. A priority topic was the need to decrease reliance on property taxes as a primary funding source for local government.

“This was an opportunity to share ideas with other county supervisors,” Standafer said. “Counties operate as an extension of the legislature, and it is important to let legislators know how their actions impact local government.”

Conference attendees also visited with their respective legislators. Standafer discussed several policy issues with Rep. Kitty Rhoades (R-Hudson) and Sen. Sheila Harsdorf (R-River Falls).
