He was born on May 3, 1923, in Elkader, Iowa, the son of Leo and Anastasia (Downy) Cassutt. He attended St. Joseph parochial school graduating from high school before furthering his education at Upper Iowa University. He received his degree in teaching. As a young man, he enlisted in the armed forces where he proudly served in the United States Army. He served during World War II as a corporal in Coast Artillery in San Diego. Upon his return, he would meet the former Joyce Kathryn Williams. The two were united in marriage on June 13, 1953, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Mankato. This union would be blessed with three children.

One of Cass’s favorite pastimes was baseball. In fact, he played professional ball for the St. Louis Cardinals with the likes of Stan Musial, Joe Garigiola, and Earl Weaver. His other passion was sweets! Anything chocolate was fair game and cake doughnuts were never safe around him. He also enjoyed a round or two of golf and was a devout member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
He will fondly be remembered by his wife, Joyce; children, Michael (Cindy) Cassutt, Mark (Donna) Cassutt, Nancy (Chris) Ison; grandchildren, Ryan, Alexandra, Kathryn, Zachary, Allison, Elliot, Ethan; siblings, Dorothy (Bob) Allen, Jean Ann (Bob) Hinds, and Jim Cassutt.
