Jon Moore, 65

Jon Dwight Moore, age 65, of Hudson, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010, at home after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Jon was born on March 16, 1944 in Madison, Wis., the son of Norman and Pauline (Chaplitski) Moore.

He enlisted in the Navy on May 16, 1961, completing boot camp before his senior year in high school. After graduating from high school in 1962, he returned to the Navy and was involved in the Cuban blockade.

Jon attended UW-Madison majoring in science, physics, and chemistry. He worked his way through college writing computer programs for the High Energy Physics department, using complex arithmetic and higher mathematical functions. While his education was in the sciences, he spent his life working in the computer field.

In 1970, Jon was employed by Autocon, a division of Control Data, later transferring to the Plymouth group of Control Data, where he worked on controls for power systems. In 1978, Jon went to work for Trane Air Conditioning and Heating, where he worked until his retirement in 2006.

He was married in 1965 to his first wife, Cheryl Lynn Whitmore, to which daughter Heather Mae was born. Their marriage later ended in divorce.

Jon was united in marriage on Oct. 21, 1989 to Jennifer (Jensen) Niccum.

He was an avid bicycler and rode across Iowa on RAGBRAI and the Minnesota TRAM several times. In the late 1990s he discovered his passion for sailing, spending a lot of time on the St. Croix River and in the Caribbean. He also enjoyed reading, shooting pool, traveling, cribbage, bowling, theater, and computer technology. His greatest love was his 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Christopher McGuire.

Jon is survived by his wife, Jennifer; daughters, Heather Moore (William Erpelding) of Lake Crystal, Minn., Kristine (William) Lecuyer of Stillwater, Minn., Susan (Larry) Anderson of Lakeland, Minn., Barbara (Robert) Schroeder of Hudson; son, Brent (Julie) Niccum of Hudson; sister, JoAnn McGuire (Robert Frieler) of Bonita Springs, Fla.; brother, Darrow (Barbara) Moore of Schofield, Wis.; grandchildren, Ethan, Aiden, Cole, Lew (Kayla), Vincent, Brent, Marie, Ben, Samantha, Matthew, Nathan, Oliver, Emelia, and Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held for Jon at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton, Minn. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at church and from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 12, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, 715-386-3725. Interment will be private in the Willow River Cemetery.
