Summer theater camps offered

Three summer camps for students will be offered by area professionals at The Phipps Center for the Arts.

Three summer camps for students will be offered by area professionals at The Phipps Center for the Arts.

  • Drama Camp for students entering grades 3 and 4 will be offered Monday through Friday, June 14-18 and again July 19-23, from 9 a.m.-noon each day for a fee of $135. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Students will explore acting, creating characters, improvisation and performance techniques. They will use the skills developed, along with their creativity, to bring a story to life. This work will be shared with family and friends on the final day of class.

  • Acting Ensemble for students entering grades 5 and 6 will be offered Monday through Friday, June 14-18 and again July 19-23, from 1-4 p.m. each day for a fee of $135. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Students will work on acting techniques, improvisation, character development, and performance techniques. The Acting Ensemble will create a performance piece inspired by student ideas and classroom improvisations. This original piece will be performed for family and friends on the final day of class.

    Instructor Diane Landis has been a director, actress, and teacher in the Twin Cities for over 20 years. She has performed with the Children’s Theatre Company, Mixed Blood Theatre, and Theatre Exchange. She has also directed for Stages Theatre Company and The Phipps Children’s Theater. Landis is currently the theater director at The Blake Upper School where she has directed over 25 productions.

    Instructor Cynthia Hechter has been teaching drama for over 20 years. She is the elementary drama teacher with The Blake School in Minneapolis and is a summer instructor at Stages Theatre Company in Hopkins. Hechter’s professional performance credits include both musical and dramatic roles at several theater venues in the Twin Cities.

    Assistant Milanda Landis is a student at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and has been involved in theater for many years. She has written, directed, and acted in numerous productions. Most recently she performed in “Liberal Arts, the Musical” at Carleton. This will be her fifth season working at The Phipps Summer Theater Camps.

  • Musical Theater Camp will be offered for students entering grades 7-10 from Monday through Friday, July 12-16, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. This camp is an intensive week of training in all aspects of musical theater for students with all levels of experience. The program offers classes in acting, vocal technique, dance and movement, as well as auditioning. An original work will be performed for family and friends on the final day of class. The fee is $265. A $50 deposit is required to register, and the tuition balance is due June 14. Enrollment is limited. Students should bring a bag lunch.

    Betsy Benjamin, vocal instructor, is a theater and commercial actor as well as a vocal/choral faculty member at the MacPhail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis.

    Landis is also an acting instructor for this camp.

    Mark Rosenwinkel, acting instructor and director, has over 20 years of acting experience, including the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the Guthrie, Mixed Blood Theatre, and Penumbra.

    Heidi Spesard-Noble, dance instructor, has performed and choreographed for the Minnesota Opera and the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. She has also danced with the Minnesota Dance Theatre and Ballet of the Dolls.
