A small, grass roots group of Hudson residents has been meeting since January to address the increased needs of residents who need support and assistance in the community.

A small, grass roots group of Hudson residents has been meeting since January to address the increased needs of residents who need support and assistance in the community.

The group points to several issues that put a strain on local families including:

  • homeless students in the Hudson school district whose number has doubled this year and that last year's homeless student population was double the year before.

  • that almost 14 percent of Hudson students qualified for free/reduced lunch, a 15 percent increase from last year and last year increased 50 percent over the year before.

  • foreclosure rates in St. Croix county increase 12percent this year and 70 percent last year.

  • Hudson Hospital’s financial assistance program has seen a five-fold increase in clients looking for help.

Over the past 5 months the group has created a name, SOURCE, an acronym for Serving Our Underserved Residents Compassionately and Equitable, adopted a mission statement and interviewed dozens of service providers in Hudson and the greater Western Wisconsin area.

With the information they have gathered, SOURCE will hold a summit with these service providers to provide additional insight and information. The meeting which is open to the public will be held this Thursday, June 3 at 6 p.m. in the Hudson Middle School cafeteria.

The group hopes to connection individuals and service organizations to help refined the direction of SOURCE. The meeting will include presentations by Greg Quinn, WestCAP, Duana Bremer, Salvation Army/Grace Place,Monica Weekes, Operation HELP and Mary Jo Sutton, Our Neighbors' Place, River Falls.
