A 20-year-old New Richmond woman escaped serious injury when her car collided with a Waste Management garbage truck on County E in the town of St. Joseph Monday morning.

Brittany A. Briggs attempted to pass the eastbound garbage as it was making a left turn onto Willow River Drive east of Burkhardt, according to Patrol Captain Scott Knudson of the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department.

The four-door Ford Contour Briggs was driving rolled after hitting the front driver’s side of the garbage truck. The car came to rest on its roof in the ditch.

Knudson said Briggs sustained “very minor” injuries and refused an ambulance ride to a hospital.

Both she and the driver of the Waste Management truck, Vernon T. Breault, 37, of Somerset, were wearing seatbelts and were alone in their vehicles.

The sheriff’s captain said that he expected Briggs to be charged with a traffic offense. He didn’t know what the specific charge would be as of Monday afternoon.

The accident was reported at 10:31 a.m. Monday.
