Alphonsus Leonard “Al” Mitchell, age 85, of Hudson, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2010, at The Gathering at Boutwell’s Landing in Stillwater, surrounded by his family.
He was born the sixth of seven children to Raymond and Frances (Weigel) Mitchell on Dec. 17, 1924, in Baldwin, Wis. He graduated from New Richmond High School and went on to attend Milwaukee School of Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1947. On May 20, 1950, Al was united in marriage to Mary Ann P. Rivard. They were blessed with six children. Al owned and operated Mitchell Electric for 30 years. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church and member of the Knights of Columbus for 50 years.
Al was known for being a talented woodworker; he truly enjoyed donating his handmade toys and crafts for various charities. He was an avid fan of the Packers, Brewers and Twins, and he liked playing Euchre and joining friends for morning coffee.
He was preceded in death by four siblings, Joseph, Viola, Raymond and Annie.
Al is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; five sons, Craig (Sharon Wong) of Minnetonka, Minn., Tom (Terese) of Hudson, Larry (Rochelle) of Hudson, Robert (Kathryn) of Bellingham, Wash., and Don of Telluride, Colo.; daughter, Judy (Jerry) Lucas of Blaine, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Shawn, Kari, Leah, McKenzie, Andy, Frances, Liam, Benji, Jacquie, and Kyle; brothers, Tom of St. Paul and Louis (Delores) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In memory of Al, memorials are preferred to St. Patrick's School Scholarship Fund.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Al at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. Interment with military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation one hour prior to Mass at church from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, 715-386-3725.
