Adam Zais, center, has his picture taken with his parents, Patty and Tim Zais, after speaking to the Noon Rotary Club last Thursday about his service in AmeriCorps.

Adam, a 2008 graduate of Hudson High School, interrupted his engineering studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a 10-month commitment to the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program.

Since joining the NCCC in early 2010, Zais has been a cook at a camp for construction volunteers in New Orleans, gutted flood-damaged homes in Nashville, Tenn., and helped set up a New Jersey camp for inner-city youth. He said he’s enjoying the experience.

He’s thinking about joining California Conservation Corps for a few months when his AmeriCorps duty is completed. He’ll eventually return to college, he said.

AmeriCorps workers receive housing, meals and a living stipend of about $100 a week (before taxes). Upon completion of the program, they get $5,350 to spend on college.
