School lunch prices go up 5 cents

The Hudson Board of Education approved a 5 cent increase in school lunch prices at last week’s July school board meeting. There will be no increase in the cost of milk.

The Hudson Board of Education approved a 5 cent increase in school lunch prices at last week’s July school board meeting. There will be no increase in the cost of milk.

Director of Financial Services Tim Erickson told the board that the increased cost was necessary to keep the school lunch program self-supporting. He said the program has seen increases in the cost of food and the fuel surcharge attached to the case price of delivered food and supplies.

Erickson reminded the board that the last school lunch increase of 10 cents was in 2008-09. There was no increase last year. He added that the cost of school lunch in Hudson even with the increase is still below the average cost in other CESA 11 schools. He also said that out of 15 area schools contacted, 60 percent said they planned to increase the cost of meals by 5 cents to 15 cents.
