The Hudson School District continues to grow as the first day of school draws closer.
At a recent Board of Education meeting, district Deputy Director Nancy Sweet said registrations at the elementary level are up from last year, particularly in kindergarten and first grade. While all numbers are preliminary at this stage, Sweet said the current count is about 50 students more than this time last year.
Sweet said that five of six elementary grade levels are at or near 400 students. The most significant growth is taking place at Rock and Houlton schools. There were more than 2,500 elementary students in district schools last year.
The Hudson Middle School had an enrollment of 1,218 last year which made it the largest single middle school in the state. The school was 86 students over capacity at the end of school last spring. That number is expected to rise this fall. The incoming sixth-grade class will have the largest increase based on the former fifth-grade class.
Sweet told board members that enrollment at Hudson High School is expected to be stable but noted that the incoming freshman class is larger than last year’s senior class. Enrollment at the end of last school year was 1,640. She said HHS enrollment will increase as the current middle school classes move ahead.
Sweet said the enrollment numbers called for the addition of two kindergarten classes, one at Willow River Elementary and another at North Hudson. Partial positions in music and physical education were also added as was a second position in Mandarin Chinese and a communications teacher at the middle school level.
Sweet said the district will take an unofficial enrollment count on the first day of school. The official count for the Department of Public Instruction and for the calculation of state aid to the district is taken on the third Friday in September.
