Seniors give summer a send-off

The warm temperatures last week didn’t dissuade area senior citizens from enjoying one last summer picnic in Ferry Landing Park in North Hudson.

Throughout the summer, the Hudson Senior Center has been holding twice-monthly picnics. They had to wear sweatshirts and light jackets for the first outing and were driven inside by the intense heat and humidity earlier in August but everyone agreed that one more time at the park was in order.

Di Johnson runs the center and said attendance has varied but usually runs between 30 and 40 people. Transportation is provided to anyone who wants to attend provided they call the center 24 hours in advance of the picnic.

“It has been really fun — a wonderful atmosphere where everybody gets to know one another. And it is a beautiful park and so special when the weather cooperates — even when it doesn’t,” said Johnson.

Food is provided by CCH and the Aging and Disability Resource Center provides the transportation. The meals, which last week included hamburgers grilled onsite by Don McGinley, cost about $3.50 but any donation is accepted.

The Hudson Senior Center is located on the campus of CCH, Pine Ridge Assisted Living and Wintergreen. Along with providing a regular meeting place, the center provides meals on wheels to area residents and is the site of monthly birthday and holiday parties.

The center’s next outing is heading out of town to an apple orchard in Stillwater on Sept. 27. For more information about the Hudson Senior Center and how to participate or volunteer call (715) 386-8709.
