Ask questions, hear answers at AAUW candidate forum in RF Monday, Oct. 11

All voters in the 30th District of the State Assembly might take interest in a candidate forum set for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in the City Council chamber of the River Falls City Hall.

“It’ll be for the Assembly candidates,” said Barb Peterson, public policy chairperson for the American Association of University Women in River Falls.

Candidates Dean Knudson and Matt Borup will take questions from the audience. Each will have two minutes per question to answer.

Peterson said the AAUW will hand out cards, on which audience members write the question(s) they want asked. She said the questions will be submitted anonymously, sorted by category and given to moderator Rita Kozak.

Peterson said, “The topics will come totally from the audience.”

She says people should prepare issue-driven questions; those will be given priority over ones that relate to, for example, the candidates’ personality. She expects the forum to last until about 8:30 p.m. and says it will follow League of Women Voters rules.

Those include presenting an objective forum, giving candidates equal time, and having them taking turns being the first respondent to a question. Borup and Knudson will each give short opening and closing statements.

Peterson said it’s important for attendees to know that they should enter through the main doors of City Hall on the upper level, then take the stairs or elevator down to the City Council chamber.

It is expected that the forum will also be shown on cable stations in and around the 30th district.

Peterson said attendees may want to know that only the candidates will appear on camera — not the audience.

Peterson said the River Falls branch of the AAUW is 76 years old and has 38 members. It meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at different locations.
