At 4:24 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, the fire department responded to a garbage fire that appears to have been intentionally set underneath the Seventh Street bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

The railroad reported the fire, which had spread to three spots along the tracks south of Lake Mallalieu when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames. The contents of the original fire were baby diapers and miscellaneous trash, they reported.

Gas leak

A leaking natural gas line brought the fire department to the Miles and Lanette Smith residence, 801 Fourth St., at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

A resident of the home smelled gas in the basement and notified authorities, according to a fire department report.

Xcel Energy responded to the residence, too. The utility’s workers shut off the gas to the residence and repaired the line.

The fire department spent about an hour ventilating the residence, according to spokesperson Miranda Kustrich.
