Owning a gym is something Joe Balfanz has always wanted to do. The 1993 Hudson High School graduate and his wife Melanie purchased St. Croix Body Zone on Oct. 1. It was formerly located at 131 Carmichael Road. This week it reopened at 2000 O’Neil Road.
Balfanz and his brother, Jeremy, own and operate Unlimited Carpentry Services, a general construction firm. As a result Balfanz did all of his own build-out and construction at the new location.
The results are noticeable the moment you walk in the door. The high ceilings, windows and generously spaced out equipment provide members with a light and airy atmosphere. The owners have added a shower, a 280-square-foot class area and retained the two tanning beds.
In addition to his construction career Joe is also a certified personal trainer.
James Hubman, continues on as the manager and as a certified personal trainer. Hubman a native of Stillwater, completed his personal training certification in Orlando, Fla., in 2005.
“I like to motivate people,” said Hubman. “I like to show people they can change: moms, dads and kids. One of the big things is to show them how to properly utilize the gym equipment.”
“I can address nutrition and offer an exercise “prescription” for individuals,” said Hubman. “Not everyone is going to come here as a finely-tuned athlete.”
Tools for their clients include treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines, free weights, light fitness machines, a Smith machine, hammer strength equipment and fitness classes.
“It is a lot more that just coming in and throwing around weights,” said Hubman. “There is a science about it.”
“We now have complete and total access with 12 dedicated parking spaces,” said Balfanz. “Also because we are not a franchise we can cater to each individual based on his or her needs.”
A grand re-opening is planned for January.
St. Croix Body Zone is open 24/7 for members by means of a keycard system. Staff is present Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Sunday by appointment only.
