The First Baptist Church choir will present its annual Christmas cantata in two services on Sunday, Dec. 19.

The 30-voice choir, under the direction of Cheryl Forester, will be singing “Night of the Father’s Love” by Pepper Choplin in the 10:15 a.m. and 7 p.m. services.

“The first time I listened to it, I knew the music and message would touch people’s hearts and spirits just as much it touched mine,” Forester said of her reason for selecting the work of eight choral numbers, plus narration.

“I liked it because it was different, new and fresh,” Forester said. “It spoke to me musically. It spoke to me through the message. Every song was powerful.”

The presentation of a Christmas cantata is long tradition of the 158-year-old congregation. Forester began directing the cantatas when she took over from Marilyn Bradley as choir director 16 years ago. Ruth Ashwood is the choir’s pianist.

The historic First Baptist sanctuary, built in 1866, will be decorated for Christmas to add to the celebration. The public is invited to either service. The church is located at the corner of Third and Vine streets in old Hudson.
